Trail Riding
Riding at the Flying R Ranch provides a variety of different trails and varied terrain. Trails are constantly being developed and our goal is to give you a great trail riding experience. Nearly all the trails leave camp via three main trails near the stalls. From this point, meander down to the North Fork River and begin your adventure after crossing the water. Watch for red, yellow, orange, green, and pink ribbons, colored lids and arrows.
Fiddler Springs Holler, Green I - This trails leaves out through the front gate, turn left and follow AA along the road in a wide grassy lined berth for approximately two miles. Watch for the green ribbons and turn left into the woods between two gates. This is a beautiful, lush, well shaded trail that runs approximately four miles. It comes out on the lodge road. Turn left and you can follow the road to the old lodge on the start of the yellow trail, pass a pond on your right and offer your horses a drink.
Buzzard's Roost, Yellow - Follow the yellow ribbons around the lodge and you will find a hole in the fence to come through. There is a nice loop along the top of the ridge with two caves, noted in clusters of ribbons. These caves are hard to find in the summer and require tricky climb down to see them. There is also a rock outlook for the brave souls who want a beautiful view. Or, just tie up your horses and enjoy the scenery. After your circle this loop, continue to follow the yellow ribbons across the ridge, down a switchback, into the meadow and cross the river. This is a nice place of water for your horses and eat your lunch. Continue to follow the yellow ribbons back across the meadow back into camp. Watch out for cows!! This trail is approximately 10 miles.
North Lodge, Green 2 - If you want a day long experience, you can finish Green I, cross the lodge road and continue on a second section of green ribbons. This trail runs along some open fields, switchbacks down a long hill and follows the perimeter of the north side of the ranch along the fence line. Before winding alongside a small algae covered pond, stop and take a break under the trees and enjoy the shade. The trail continues into the meadow and then connects with yellow Buzzard's Roost Trail.
Red Trail - This trail starts across the meadow after crossing the low water river crossing. Go into the woods then up the hill to the right. The trail will bring you out onto the forest service road Continue down to the barn, passing a gate on the left heading toward Turnbull Cave (pictures in photo gallery). Follow the gravel road to the creek. DO NOT CROSS THE CREEK. Turn right and follow the creek upstream a little way to Turnbull Cave on your right. Continue this trail around where it will join Orange II and you can either take Red Mountain Trail by turning left or continue to the forest service road and come back to camp by turning right and going through the gate you passed on the way to the cave.
Orange Trail - The Orange trail starts after you cross the river and the meadow. Head up the hill and follow the trail until it ends by the old barn. This trail is a little more challenging and follows the ridge top.
Red Mountain Trail, Orange II - Watch for orange ribbons turning into the woods off the forest service road. This continues to another set of orange and yellow ribbons which you will go between and continue to the T in the trail. Turn right, watch for the can in the tree, and continue on another, well shaded forest service road until you come to a gravel road. Turn left and you will be on Steel Bridge Road until you come to Steel Bridge. Cross the river and continue until the road becomes paved AA for a short distance to the entrance to the ranch.
Zane Gray Trail, Pink - This trail starts after you cross the river and enter the meadow. Follow the pink ribbons around to the old barn and runs along the base of the ridge on the old Wells Fargo Trail. Follow the pink ribbons up and around the hills and you will end up at the bottom of a wide clearing. Turn left heading toward an old barn and old flatbed trailer. Follow the orange ribbons back to camp.
